All Our Money is a funny, gripping and enlightening theatre show made from the real-life human drama of this budget setting process. You won’t see any charts or even hear any numbers.
All Our Money is being performed as a part of Stan’s Cafe’s “Micro-Productions” Project which is kindly funded by the Arts Council Project Grants. With thanks to the Great Western Arcade and Colmore Business Improvement District.
Each year Birmingham City Council spends more than £3,000,000,000. Where does all this money come from and how is it decided where it all goes?
This is the unlikely subject matter of All Our Money, the latest show from local theatre company Stan’s Cafe.
The show, which is being rehearsed and performed in the Great Western Arcade, promises to be fast, funny and touching. Without using any graphs or referring to any numbers it will revealing startling facts about how our city runs and show the scale of the figures involved.
Anyone sceptical that satisfying drama can be wrung from such unlikely subject matter clearly don’t know about Stan’s Cafe who have toured the world with their remarkable, playful productions which include The Just Price Of Flowers which explained the 2008 financial crisis and Of All The People In All The World that turns human population statistics into emotionally compelling stories using rice.
Director James Yarker says
“We were inspired by the story of Hartlepool where, famously, the local football mascot was elected mayor and have tried to imagine what it would be like if you or I were plucked off the street to run the city’s budget, the results would be hilarious and terrifying and our learning curve would be incredibly steep – that’s what we’re aiming for with this show”
He continues
“Rehearsing and performing in the Great Western Arcade is going to be a great treat. We’ll be right in the heart of the city the show is about, visible to passers by, and when the show is ready on Saturday we can open the doors and people can step in to see what we’ve managed to make in five days.”
